The Best Music You’ve Never Heard

The Fieldhouse Artist of the Month for August is Jared Mahone, aka Verizon’s Indie Icon!

We are really excited for Jared and his newly earned title as the first Verizon Indie Icon! He entered the contest through ReverbNation and was pleasantly surprised to be chosen as semi-finalist. The contest was primarily focused on hip hop, R&B, and gospel artists, which are genres Jared loves and is highly influenced by, but never really considered himself a part of. But the judges disagreed, really loved his Garage Soul vibe, and made him a finalist! Along with the other four finalists, Jared and his band were flown out to Chicago to shoot a promotional video at Buddy Guy’s Legends. The videos were posted online and fans were able to vote once a day for about 2 weeks. Turns out Jared WON by a landslide of votes! The band was then flown out to New Orleans to play a set at ESSENCE FEST, with all-access passes to the main performances. How awesome is that? Way to go Jared! Read more about his experience becoming Verizon’s Indie Icon here.

Check out this fun video the band made to help remind fans to vote:

Jared Mahone is a highly innovative and fan driven artist. His first album Mixtape was the product of a songwriting experiment resulting in a handful of songs broad enough for multiple albums. Starting in 2010, Jared set out to write and record a new song every week for an entire year. He kept an online journal where hundreds of fans could follow the creative process and share their comments. Underground Columbus would feature a new interview with Jared every Monday night at 7pm. In 2011, fans were able to select their favorite songs to be included on the full-length album and Mixtape was finally released on October 23, 2012, after a successful Kickstarter campaign. The album was dedicated to all the fans for their support and inspiration.
